Memories of May

Poem number twenty-two NaPoWriMo

It was a May

like no other

when I did wander

through the meadow

where wild poppies grew

somehow I just knew

that I’d find my happiness there

that May as I admired

the red poppies

heads nodding in the breeze

in a color

like the brightest of sunrises

I happened to see

your smiling eyes

looking at me

you were also admiring

these flowers growing in the meadow

and our spring love began

we danced all through the summer

like two butterflies

flitting from flower to flower

and having fun down by the river

so happy I was

having thought  I had found love

to last my whole life through

suddenly just like the summer

you simply went away

as the cold autumn winds blew in

throughout the winter

I wondered if perhaps you’d return

once May came again

but as one May slipped into another

alone and lost I wandered

why things didn’t go my way

there was nothing left to say

but as every May comes and goes

my heart still knows

that a true love will come my way

so through red poppy meadows

I continue to stray
