Bird on the Road 020

It was happy and content

just to sit and watch

people drift by

children playing on the country road

using it as a footstool

to rest beneath the sun

Nothing to disturb it

watching the seasons go by

in the fall the colorful

leaves that danced along the road

blown by the north wind

in the winter

it could sleep

beneath a blanket of white

waiting for spring

when it would awaken

washed clean by the spring rains

hear the happy twitter of song birds

returning from the south

and see daisies springing up

in the nearby meadow

summer was a real joy

warm beneath the sun

fat and lazy farm cats

would come to lay upon it

to bask in the rays of the afternoon sun

Nothing could please it more

than spending many more centuries

knowing that it

existed, it lived and its heart beat

no one knew, no one cared

but it was content

being a rock by the roadside
