Birth of a Smile

Summer 2012 007

When you first gazed

upon this world

it was new to you

your eyes wide with wonder

beginning to shine brightly

in the early hours

on the morning of your birth

before the sun rays

and the light from the sky

could shine back at you

then suddenly a cloud appeared

a cloud with a silver lining

so that you could share your smile

and pass it around the world

to the children who need blessings

to the old who are weak and frail

to the homeless who are so sad

to those who are bent

beneath the burdens of the world

your smile was meant to be spread about

to bring happiness in every heart

you were as light as a feather

between the heavens and the earth

spreading smiles far and wide

holding on to that cloud

your birthright

the silver lining
